Maize production will10 million tons in 5 years in Bangladesh

There is a huge potential for maize cultivation in the country, said the Minister of Agriculture of Bangladesh, Md. Abdur Razzak, MP, said that there has been improved innovation, favorable agro-climatic climate, and modern technical assistance is being provided to the farmers so that the production of maize can be multiplied. He said work is underway to increase maize production to 10 million metric tonnes per annum in the next five years.
There is a lot of demand for maize abroad. Maize is being widely used as food for fish and livestock in the country. Therefore, steps have been taken to further increase maize production, the minister said. Work is underway to increase maize production to 10 million metric tons per year in the next five years. And if this can be done, it will be possible not only to become self-sufficient in maize production but also to earn a lot of foreign exchange by exporting abroad, he said.
According to the Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute, the production of maize in the country was 750,000 metric tons in 2009, which has increased to 54 million metric tons in 2020. On the other hand, the demand for maize is 65-70 lakh tonnes per annum. The country has produced 12 lakh 50 thousand metric tons of wheat in 2020.
